Easter Island Timelapses

Here's some timelapses of the moais on Easter Island. These are one of the seven ancient world wonders and a definate on the must-see list before you die. Easter Island can be a bit expensive, so bring extra cash with you, especially if you want a souvenir to bring home. The food is delicious and there are fresh papayas, guava, bananas, purple sweet potatoes, and some of the best fish you've ever ate. The tuna there is amazing. The food is based on the catch of the day, so expect it always to be fresh and tasty. Easter Island is part of the country of Chile, but has natives that speak Rapa Nui (The Local Dialect) & Spanish.
The moais themselves are legendary because no one is sure exactly how they got to their various places throughout the island from the main hill where they were carved. There have been numerous scientific attempts to explain exactly how it was done but it is stil unsolved. I witnessed these statues in person, and it must have been an amazing feat for ancient peoples to move them.
Another crazy aspect of the island is the lack of old growth trees. Sometime in the past all the trees on the island got chopped down by the natives, who in turn went crazy and turned into cannibals and died off. Years later other humans arrived from what people think were the Polynesian Islands. Today there are some trees brought in from other places, mostly Eucaliptus, which isn't good for much. The natives sell statues from the few remaining native trees and these are very expensive for the size of some wood carving you'd get most other places. I suggest not to get one as these aren't very renewable resources.
To fly in to Easter Island you have two options: fly from Santiago, Chile or from Tahiti.

Chile Video Timelapses

A set of timelapses from beautiful Chile. The final one with the red sunset is from El Colorado, Chile. It took over an hour of freezing in the cold to get that shot, but it was so worth it!

Sebastian Camus is a pro snowboarder from Chile. This part chronicles his International travels with us through Chile and Argentina. He's one of the funniest and funnest guys I know. He's founder of Herba clothing and splits his year between Chile and Davos, Suiza (Switzerland). Once you know Camus you never forget him and he's one of those guys who is always down for an adventure and some snowboarding.
The shots of the girls was at Valle Nevado's famous swimming pool, and supposedly one of them was a Miss Chile candidate, but we have no facts to back this one up, so believe what you want.

Another Earthquake in Chile - 3 in 3 days

Woke up today to another earthquake. Yesterday there was one in the North of Chile. That equals 3 quakes in 3 days! Scary considering they might be pre-tremors. I hope that we don't get a big earthquake here. No one else seems even the slightest bit concerned about an earthquake in Santiago. I've only been in one earthquake before, in Seattle and it was less powerful than the 2 I've felt on Saturday and today (Monday).

Earthquake in Chile

There was definately an Earthquake (terremoto) today in Chile, we just felt it shake our apartment in Santiago. It was crazy strong!

In The News

A moderate earthquake rattles central Chile, causing alarm in some areas but no victims or damage has been reported, authorities say.

The tremor at 3.23 p.m. (1823 GMT) had a preliminary magnitude of 5.8, with its epicenter some 150 kilometers (95 miles) northwest of Santiago, near the port city of Valparaiso, said the Seismological Institute of the University of Chile.

The director of the government's Emergency Bureau, Carmen Fernandez, said the tremor lasted for about one full minute, causing some people to take to the streets, but with no victims or damage being recorded.

The quake was felt across around 600 kilometers (370 miles) of Chile's narrow territory.

This is the fourth time in three days that Chileans have witnessed quakes after a trio of temblors jolted Chile's Pacific coast on Thursday.

Barrio Bellavista Bohemian District of Santiago

Bellavista means Beautiful View in English and its known as the Bohemian and Cultural Arts District of Santiago, Chile for good reason. There is so much graffiti everywhere my camera ran out of batteries snapping away at this collection of pintadas. Its an eclectic center where people of all kinds mix and mingle y se venden cosas de todo tipo.

Welcome! Bienvenidos! The Barrio Bellavista Neighborhood. El barrio bohemio y cultural de Chile.

People selling goods in front of the Castle entrance to the Teleferico, a cable car that takes you to the top of the Cerro Santa Lucia, a giant hill overlooking the city. There is also a giant virgen Mary on the top that watches and protects the city of Santiago. Several religious, Catholic, events happen here throughout the year.

Travel Tips #1

I've found Kayak is the best search engine for trips, they search the searcher websites and find you the cheapest site from sites like travelocity.com,orbitz.com,expedia.com,americanairliness.com,LAN.com, + every search site available. I've spent days trying to figure out the best sites online, then I read an article in New York Times about Kayak. Its worked for me to buy my tickets back and forth from Chile to the United States 4 times.

Stencil Art

Stencil art is huge in South America. Its quicker and easier than creating your own custom piece each time. It seems to be accepted as a legitimate art piece and is rarely painted over if the pieces are in the right alley, wall, staircase, etc.

Perfect Pass-out

On my way to spanish class today in downtown Santiago I had to look twice when I saw this guy passed out. He was unconcious, with mouth open in the perfect position. Whether he was a bum, tired traveler, or impromptu artist, he had to be captured on film for the world to see.

Graffiti in La Florida

Sometimes there's not enough time to stop and take a photo. So you have to just snap one out the window. These are some shots of graffiti in La Florida, in the southern part of Santiago.

This weekend we took a trip south of Santiago to check out the Cajon del Rio Maipo y San Jose de Maipo y Pirque. The river itself is a murky brown, so I was hesitant to get in and swim, but our dog Foxy was all about it. Along the way we saw a stand that sold honey and local foods, built like a giganic mushroom in the forest.
