A country like Chile is very remote. We decided to go far to the southern tip of Chile and visit Chiloe, an Island. We had to pass through a bigger town called Puerto Montt on our way. The next day we took a ferry onto the island city of Ancud, Chiloe. There we explored the beaches, graffiti, animals, and markets. This was such an amazing road trip, I can't wait to go back again. It feels so strange to get that close to Antartica, check out the Chiloe penguins on the rock in one of the shots.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-11109094780998785562011-06-09T10:57:00.000-07:002011-06-09T11:17:00.722-07:00Win a Free Trip to Snowboard at Valle Nevado

Win a Free Trip to Snowboard at Valle Nevado for the 2011 season. LAN Airlines and Valle Nevado Ski Resort are linking up to offer you the chance to have a free Chilean ski vacation on them. Win free airfare, hotel stay at Valle Nevado and Lift tickets for you and three of your friends and family. This is an amazing chance to stay at one of the best places in the world to ski or snowboard. Valle Nevado is located in the mountains just outside of Santiago, Chile. People from all over the world come to enjoy the breathtaking views atop the Andes Mountains. The best thing about all of this is that the Chilean winter is between June-September, so its a great chance to ski or board during the Northern Hemisphere summer. Chileloco has spent some serious time at Valle Nevado riding the inbounds terrain, the backcountry, and the Snowpark. The staff at Valle Nevado is always striving to make the experience better for their guests and they are serious about providing a world-class experience. One of our favorite spots is the pool on the deck, where you can watch the public riding down the slopes while enjoying it from a hot soak in the tub. Valle offers excellent dining options and some crazy nightlife parties. As of June 2011, Valle Nevado was already receiving significant snowfall, so it looks to be a good season.
After last season started with a blast just after Memorial Day 2008, everyone was hoping for a repeat. Whether due to global warming (a large hole in the ozone layer is over South America) or simply a seasonal draught, the slopes down in Chile remained sunny and dry through most of June this year. 70 degree plus days in Santiago made for better skating and bbq weather than early winter storms. The weather forecasters were predicting an unusually dry year and the people were wondering if they should trade in their snowboard for a surfboard.

Then a switch from the heavens must have been flipped. The rains started in the South of Chile and spread fast to the Northern regions. As they reached the Andes, the first snowfalls started to form dropping 3 feet of powder. If that wasn't enough, during the last weekend 47 inches dropped in about 30 hours, with sun the following day. Now the mountains are drenched in white fluff so deep, you can get lost underneath it all. When you fall over you are literally swimming in snow.

Here are some updates on Chilean happenings.

At El Colorado ski resort they've made some big changes adding a new t-bar to access further zones and park rats can purchase a Snowpark-only season's pass. They have added new terrain in Farellones with the first lighted night riding in South America. Look out for the weekly night rail jams and contests. Valle Nevado announced that they are discontinuing their halfpipe as of this year, which is sad because it was formerly host to the first snowboarding World Cup event each year in September. In lighter news, sounds like Valle Nevado will host the 2nd Annual Pink Sessions, the first all day Girls-only contest in Chile. Portillo has plenty of snow and it looks to be a good time over there if you have the $1000+ to drop on a week at a private resort with a limit on lift ticket sales of 400 tickets per day. In the south, Termas de Chillan has changed its name to Nevados de Chillan after an ownership change. In addition they are focusing additonal resources on building a snowpark after years of catering exclusively to building exclusive slopes for touring slalom ski teams and ignoring the growing snowboard community. In Pucon the crew at Beanies and Bikinis (the restaurant, snowboard shop and local riders mecca) have been busy developing the Piedra Azul Freestyle Riding Club to get local riders together to progress themselves and build new features. This is the same crew behind the Big Bang Contest, which boasts the only Backcountry snowboard contest to go down in the month of October each year.

As these words are being written, yet another storm has ripped into the Andes and the forecasts are looking excellent for a season of deep dry pow-pow in Chile. Plane tickets are cheaper than ever, so take a break from working this summer and drop some loot on the trip of a lifetime. For those that have to see to believe, El Colorado has added a collection of webcams to get an up-to the minute view of conditions on the slopes at http://www.elcolorado.yx.cl.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-24731763909050128812009-11-02T08:38:00.000-08:002009-11-02T08:38:21.006-08:00Manuel Diaz Snowboarding from Chile to Stevens Pass in this Video

Estimados:

Watch as Pro Snowboarder Manuel Diaz shows us what its like to spend a day snowboarding the Andes. A complete day exploring the mountains, and shredding the backcountry.
We meet up with Manuel at his house in Farellones. I was traveling with the television crew from 24/7 TV Chile. We were on a mission to show exactly what a day in the life of a snowboarder in Chile is like. Manuel Diaz was the perfect candidate because he is truly the best Chilean freestyle rider out there. He's able to build and destroy big jumps and he's got a good style. His sponsors include Nitro Snowboards, Billabong Clothing, Bern Helmets, Spacecraft, and POW gloves.
So we met with Manuel and proceeded to fill up gas at the local gas station, which has gallons of gas at over $5.00 USD each. Ouch! Products are always more expensive up in the mountains. Then we get the gas and head up to the top, where we dropped the snowmobiles and took off for the upper backcountry. The powder was deep and it took us a while to get out there, but when we finally did, we realized that there was a perfect spot to build a jump out in the middle of nowhere, with a nice steep landing. In snowboarding you really can't ask for much else, so we were very happy that we found this place. The snow was deep and dry and the sun was shining. Classic Andes mountain riding.
We did a little interviewing, where I got interviewed for 24/7 about my recent dvd Sentimental Values and we did an interview with Manuel about building jumps. Then all the camera guys got into position across the valley and got ready to get some shots. Manuel went to hit the jump with Vicho, another local rider. Manuel proceeded to land trick after trick, including fs360, swbs540, fs540, fs720, cab9, bs180, and almost a fs1080. Vicho had some trouble since it was his first jump in a few months and let Manuel take over session. It was an incredible moment to see. Manuel was unstoppable and everything worked out great. The hardest part of the day was snowmobiling out of the area doubling with the sleds in some very steep terrain. It was a great start to June snowboarding in Chile. Thanks to Manuel, Felipe Costa, and Marcello Flores for getting this day organized for us.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-85854304995579527702009-06-09T07:24:00.000-07:002009-06-09T07:41:14.816-07:00Ski Araucarias New Snowpark
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 293px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRSpGJY6ZSpL2VXEghUrIXp1v-4MY09qrcW4gzehtNmhVTAElMLNNJIih29eX9Enim3KoOGSrTJkcG3fvAOfW9DvDJ99joE5gIU6PAZspJ3O8AbUl_doTJfXRaAbxk-C9fi3oaxz6gJ88/s320/mapa.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345333797540823506" />
Ski Araucarias just released this map of their new snowpark and lift access terrain. This resort is located in the south of Chile on a glacier. The highest chairlift reaches 1,942 Meters or 6371 feet. The resort is located 82kms northeast of Temuco, Chile on the Llaima Volcano in the 9th region of Chile. It is within the Nacional Park Conguillio, a beautiful location with forests of Araucaria trees, also known as Monkey trees. You might have seen this location in Planet Earth's segment on forests. To get there from Temuco go North on Route 5: the Panamerican Highway and go east on Ruta S-31, passing through Vilcun and Cherquenco and you'll reach the resort of Las Araucarias. From Santiago go south on Route 5: the Panamerican Highway until you pass Lautaro, then head east on Ruta S-31 before you reach Temuco.
This resort will be a true sight to see, and its a world away from the more modern resorts such as Valle Nevado or Termas de Chillan. Be prepared for stormy weather and possible road closings. Anything is possible in the South of Chile. Good luck and have a great time at Las Araucarias.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-32985567498018867342009-04-19T17:27:00.000-07:002009-04-19T17:27:56.368-07:00Guided Chile Snowboard TourChileloco is proud to announce our summer 2009 Guided Chile Snowboard Tour for skilled riders only.
We have been in Chile the last 4 winters and are expecting this one to be the best. Living in the mountains, ski-in-ski out style is the best way to experience what Chile is all about. That's why you'll be staying in the mountains, away from the mess of the city and commuting hassle. You'll be able to stay on your board all day long if you like, since most of the restaurants and bars are located next to the mountainside. There are also discotheques that open at 12pm and close sometime after sunrise. The scenery is unreal, something similar to Alaska with large mountainous peaks and probably the best sunsets you will ever experience. The tours are flexible, which means that we're always ready to show you a good time, however you'd like to experience life in Chile.
Traveling is what we love to do. It feels so strange to get that close to Antartica, check out the Chiloe penguins on the rock in one of the shots.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-27476644082555466762008-12-19T15:35:00.000-08:002008-12-19T15:37:58.373-08:00La Parva Bike Park Opening Day Fiesta Dec 20th

When you are looking for directions in Santiago, Chile it is hard to find the right website. While you can buy maps in libraries around the city, it is hard to find places by address only. Recently I came across Mapcity.cl which is similar to such search engines as mapquest in South America. It has precise directions to get you to where you need to go. Traveling to locations throughout Santiago,CL can be confusing, to find directions to where you need to go this is a great service. It has helped me find places among the crazy traffic of downtown Santiago. If you need to see where your hotel is located, find a good restaurant, or meet a business associate, then look no further. Once again chileloco is here to help you learn more about life in Santiago, Chile.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-16576893891963434682008-09-17T16:26:00.000-07:002008-09-25T10:20:45.620-07:00Billabong Slopestyle Snowboard Contest Video 2008

We just got back from a snowboard trip all over Chile's Ski resorts to check out the conditions hitting up El Colorado, Valle Nevado, Portillo, Pucon, Corralco, Los Arenales, and Nevados de Chillan. Here's a quick rundown of the resorts as of mid to late August:

Portillo Ski Resort: August 12, 2008 Snow Conditions: Good Snowpack, lots of powder. It was a kind of far day trip from Santiago, taking around 2 hours to get there but the lift lines were practically empty and it was powder for the taking. They even added another 5 person rastre. which provides access into the trademark steep lines and chutes of Portillos resort. We hit up all the runs and ended the day with a couple backcountry hikes for pure dry pow slashes.

El Colorado Backcountry: August 13, 2008 It can be a bit hard to see on a greybird day at El Colorado ski resort because there is a lack of trees for depth perception. So you end up getting dizzy and unable to tell which direction you are heading. Luckily we found a run through the rocks into Farellones that we could see alright. So we dropped the chute into the slushy pow and pointed it for a fast double rock drop. After that we called it a day.

Pucon: August 16 & 17, 2008 There was some fresh powder coming in for us in Pucon and we arrived to the resort with great conditions, bluebird and pow. Unfortunately the lifts weren't open so we hiked some runs through the trees and slid some logs. On the second day it had warmed up in most places and the resort was filled with ice. That didn't stop us from finding pow in the trees, but it resulted in some fresh board chips from negotiating the woods and a bit of hiking around.

Corralco: August 18, 2008: The resort is only open from Friday to Sunday and since we showed up on a Monday we had to find our own means to ride once again. After the amazingly scenic drive to the resort, with some very rare sun for the area we were stoked to have driven this far. You have to drive through a one car road which is carved out of snow taller than the roof and arrive at the volcano. From the parking lot we shredded along the side of the road above the drivers as they followed us down. Then we built a road gap and hit it up a few times.

Los Arenales: August 19, 2008 As we arrived it started snowing and the road to the lodge was covered with snow from the parking lot. We realized that we were spending another day hiking around. The only other people in the parking lot were some military skiers out on a mission into the snowy abyss. We hiked around in some trees and snapped some photos.

City of Chillan: August 19, 2008 Nightime: Sidenote for first time travelers to Chile: Our friend fell asleep while he was watching a truck full of snowboard gear in the Chillan jumbo parking lot. he forgot to lock any of the doors and he was parked in a dark corner of the supermarket. Apparently this parking lot is crawling with thieves who proceeded to steal 3 backpacks out of the inside of the truck while he was sleeping! Amazingly they couldn't get the snowboards in time.

Nevados de Chillan: August 20, 2008 It snowed a little overnight and the drive up to the mountain was beautiful. Some of the key chairlifts weren't working, so you were forced to take t-bars most of the way up. We had some girl beginners to circle-bar lifts and they had a tough time making it up on the things. The chair operators were of little help to these innocent girls and he would yank the handle and send them flying whether the were ready or not. Definately bad customer service by the lifties at Nevados de Chillan. There is a ski and snowboard contest going doing there the 21st and 22nd of August and they were building the park up with a boardercross, jumps, rails, and boxes. The park was in a cool spot in the steeps and I enjoyed this addition to Chillan's snowpark features. We headed all the way to the top of the mountain and checked out the volcanoes Old Chillan and New Chillan which were sending off volcanic steam. There was a cool mound of snow and we popped some ollies in front of the volcanoes for the camera. Then we shredded some fun pow mixed with icy patches. There were definately some goods out there, but it was hard to avoid bumping around on ice. It was really surprising to see the lack of base Nevados de Chillan has this year. We attempted to do some familiar tree runs, but there wasn't enough space in between the trees like usual and it was harder to negotiate the deep valleys on your shredstick without having to hike or one-foot a bit. It was fun to shred but not as good as years past.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-60926982967669163802008-08-11T19:50:00.000-07:002008-11-27T09:09:37.070-08:00Pink Sessions 1st All Girl Ski & Snowboard Contest at Valle Nevado, Chile
1st Place / Lugar Carola Davila slides the Graffitti Box with some smooth style.

The Pink Sessions 1st All-Girls ski & snowboard contest was held at Valle Nevado Saturday August 9th. Around 30 ladies showed up to slide the boxes, jump the booters, and flaunt their styliest snow gear. Some good riding went down and it was impressive to see how many women are starting to get into the sport here in Chile. Everyone showed up with a smile and positive vibes. It was a nice progression session for the chicas who charged hard and rode better than some of their guy friends do. Props out to Felipe Erlandsen who organized the event. Sponsors included Mallsport, Burton, Rusty, DC, Carefree, Cosmopolitan, Funner Films, and more.

1st Place $600 - Carola Davila (Chile)
2nd Place $250 - Sabrina Kusar, (France)
3rd Place $100 - Roberta Irarrazaval, (Chile)

Am Women
1st Place - Belen Berrios, (Chile)
2nd Place - Jeime Liebonitz, (Chile)
3rd Place - Maria Canterini, (Brazil)

Roberta gets some big air on her way to third place.

Sabrina Kusar throws down a diirtty method over the big tabletop jump.

The awards at the first ever Pink Sessions.

Pink Sessions Ladies.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297237327281623780noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1811116279868210271.post-49012518093980710372008-07-23T06:11:00.000-07:002008-07-29T14:25:52.272-07:00Farellones, Chile Place to Stay<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSj0jGu8fBgsoYDsaKsZ140fHLEFnecHRoJAfMGrG2Kf1yEj_AoiHI-nWpGp0wqqQ5SH8cbf80S2P7aA0tizgqWACI2EnCQ05xJUwzMixffCG8mWAzwXr5ikf9MEzS8RNm8YlqyVR2EEo/s320/P1040076.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226197409310731522" />
It's already late-July, we are expecting another 10cm of snow in the
next 24 hours! Our guests have been tiring themselves out here skiing
full days at La Parva, El Colorado and Valle Nevado ski areas.
For the last two Ski seasons here in Chile, The Farellones Ski
Hostel has been providing budget concious travellers a cozy place to
sleep before heading out to ski La Parva, El Colorado and Valle
Nevado. So far this year, we have had skiers and snowboarders from
French Polynesia, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, The United
States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil and, of course, Chile.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-cAeWjKwHG1n6IHgysAS4TnEpVZdGFu8iZJ9A1-FAoZZ5un99ovKvPmuf255Er8GvhA9CE4XmVOtDk736ieLMx9Zq5wQdpPb6s70VFy_GNtrp8ueL29Ws0LpimPzXYyEIYEZMP_zBnZs/s320/P1030851.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226197414960209682" />
Our guests wake up to fresh ground coffee, scrambled eggs,
homemade fresh bread, cereal and yogurt. We feel that a ski day should
begin with a filling meal and hot tea or coffee. Guests also enjoy our
"mi casa es su casa" attitude. After a long day on the slopes, you
will arrive to a warm, inviting hostel to share your stories with
other guests. We are a 2 minute walk from several restaurants. For
late nighters and lovers of live music, try the bar about 100 meters
away, you won't be disappointed by local talent and decent cover
bands, not to mention sponsored all-night dance parties (if you think
you can handle it). Since we are a 2 minute walk from the drag lift at
El Colorado, you can ski from La Parva ski area and Valle Nevado back
to our spot. All three ski areas here are connected, so you won't need
transportation once here. There is a free shuttle that takes skiers to
La Parva at 8:30 a.m., this is right outside our front door. We also
offer private transportation to Valle Nevado ski area for about US
$10.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglTYqNzvKdS58CX-4zrCQ7tGbDJ6duIGlrTxVGNnWBK0YqqLxycei0xYLiTsO1O82ZSvWUKWTLPlSqpWEp4W-kIhBhq6QfGJZe3TfmRo_TuEX1If_yLAbrsEWMhdF1x5ESM0-SKnL763k/s320/P1030852.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226197417016183186" />
Our ski hostel is full of ski information for Chile and
Argentina.
